For the past 10 years energy prices have continued to increase. With the governments new deal to allow EDF to build a nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point. that has all but guaranteed the prices will continue to rise for the next 20 yrs.
Furthermore, under the subsidy regime promised by George Osborne, householders and businesses will need to pay £92.50 per MW for Hinkley electricity compared to the current wholesale price of £45 per MW. To make matters worse, the £92.50 will rise in line with the consumer price index (CPI) rate of inflation, meaning that, by 2030, the guaranteed price could be as high as £150.

The uptake of energy-efficient lighting can have a large impact on the UK's overall energy usage and associated carbon footprint, and this, coupled with increases in energy prices, is forcing businesses to look for ways to reduce energy use, or else pass increased costs on to their customers.
In order for new lighting products and technologies to be taken up by users, there needs to be reliable measurement methods in place to characterise their performance.
Eton have now designed an energy saving linear fluorescent lamp called 'The Eton Lamp'. Their aim was to provide the same amount of lux (light intensity) as a standard commercial T8 lamp but with around half the energy consumption. The Eton Lamp is designed to replace the traditional T8 lamp without any expensive modifications to existing fittings or wiring.
Eton HK approached Kema Dekra to provide the performance data required to validate their product claims, as Kema Dekra has the expertise and equipment required to provide absolute and traceable measurement of light.
Dekra was able to test several versions of The Eton Lamps in controlled conditions and provide all the key photometric and electrical performance data to assess lamp performance.
The measurements carried out by Dekra included: total luminous flux (how much light), luminous intensity distribution (where the light goes) and spectral distribution of the light source (colour properties of the light). Differences in the spectral output of light sources are important as they affect human perception and therefore the preference of one lamp over another. Traceable measurements were also made of the input electrical power in order to calculate the lamp's energy efficiency.
